When God the Father sees me saturated with redemption in indissoluble union with God the Son and whispers (in proleptic prophecy), through God the Holy Spirit, “You are beautiful”, then it’s sublimely powerful and deeply transformative. When my wife sees me through eyes salved with the ointment of grace and says “You are beautiful”, then it’s similarly powerful (a bit less so when she tells me that just before she needs me to do some digging in the garden -it’s not just men who know how to pull out this phrase at critical junctures of need and desire). When I read “you are beautiful” on a restaurant tip jar it explodes with all the power of a flat penlight battery. But hey…I’ll give my inner cynic a sleeping pill and take it.
