Depending on which part of the church you belong to, you will encounter varied attitudes to theology and theologians.
In some churches you are expected to be a theologian to have anything to say. In other churches, if you mention you are a theologian, you are treated with suspicion, usually because of an assumption that you have corrupted the true faith with liberal and secular ideas, and pose a threat.
However, theology is simply systematic, rational thinking about God and the Bible (theos [God] + logos [rational thought and communication]).
ISN’T THEOLOGY OPPOSED TO A PURE, TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?
Although Christianity essentially entails a relationship with God, and we can’t reduce relationships to science and rationality, we can’t avoid having beliefs that are more or less structured about all manner of things, including God.
EVERYONE IS A THEOLOGIAN.
There really isn’t a choice between operating with a theology versus without one. The only choice is between being conscious, intentional, and humble about our beliefs (or theologies) and submitting them to God, the Bible and each other for purification and alignment versus imagining we operate out of direct biblical and spiritual knowledge, free of contaminating theologies and other unbiblical beliefs.
When we claim to have a pure faith, without a theology, we are simply not acknowledging our assumptions, agendas and blind spots. This makes us more immune to truth and correction and actually renders us less reliable and trustworthy. We pose a threat, in other words.
